Tutoring

I tutor students one-on-one in math and preparation for college entrance exams (PSAT, SAT, PLAN, ACT)  If you live in the research triangle area and, after reading the below, you decide you would like to set up tutoring, you can e-mail me at cfhemminger@gmail.com

If you need support for your student in math:

I generally recommend meeting twice per week for an hour each time.  The cost for this will run $120+ per week depending on time of day and location.

If you need help in preparing for a college entrance exam:

Potential clients often begin by asking what I "offer."  I don't actually have any set "packages" and what I do is geared toward the individual student.  I have had families call in a panic the day before the test, and ask for just one session.  I had a family call to try to begin weekly sessions with a seventh grader which they intended to continue for the next four years.  I'll do the former; I won't do the latter.  I don't recommend either one.  Here are some general guidelines for situations I typically encounter:

If you have a student who needs a little of everything:

If the student is fairly close to his or her goal, and just wants to maximize the score by doing some selective review and picking up a few testing tips, then it generally works well to sign up for 5 sessions.   Typically we would spend time reviewing geometry, going over 3 or 4 points of grammar, and reviewing vocabulary.  We will practice pacing and develop a strategy for when to guess and when to omit. It works even better if those sessions can be done right before the test.  Ideally, I would see the student M-F for 90 minutes each day for a Saturday test.  If it is necessary to do the sessions a month or more before the test, then I would suggest scheduling one additional session just before the test for a brush-up.

The total cost for the tutoring would be $300 + depending on location.  In addition, the student should have access to a study guide.  I may advise the purchase of a workbook depending on the student's needs.  The workbooks can range from $12 to $35.

You should try to schedule:  5 or 6  90-minute sessions
Estimated total time:  10 - 12 hours;  7.5 - 9 hours with me, plus 3 hours of "homework."
Estimated total cost: $400 - $500.  (including books, etc.)

If you have a student who needs substantial help with Critical Reading:

Critical Reading help is time-consuming and requires a significant homework commitment from the student.  I'm not a big fan of spending huge amounts of time preparing for an exam, but I do make an exception when we are covering content that will be useful in college and in life.  Working through the critical reading material will require 10 or more hours of tutoring plus 10 or more hours of homework.  In addition, the student is required to purchase The Critical Reader by Erica Meltzer (currently $33.20 on Amazon) and a supplementary binder for $5.  Because this can get expensive, I will periodically offer a Critical Reading class.  The student can learn to read more critically in a small-group setting for $250.  This cost includes the binder, but not The Critical Reader.  Check the calendar for the next class.

For one-on-one work -
You should try to schedule:  10 hours or more in either 60 or 90 minute increments. (90 is better.)
Estimated total time:  15+ hours; 10+ hours with me, and 5+ hours of "homework."
Estimated total cost:  $600 - $700 (including books)

If you have a student who needs help with Writing:

First, please be advised that I am not an essay specialist.  They do exist, and if it is primarily the essay you would like to work on, you may want to call one of them.  Most of what I do is for the multiple choice section which is 75% of your SAT writing score.

Writing needs vary widely.  However, unless the student has serious grammar issues, most of the gains will occur in one to three sessions.  If the student does have serious grammar issues, I may require the purchase of a grammar workbook ($16 plus tax off the shelf, often less from Amazon) however, usually the student can just borrow one of mine. The student will need access to a test study guide.

Assuming there are no pre-existing issues, you should try to schedule:  3 90-minute sessions. If your student finishes sooner, I will cancel any remaining sessions at no cost to you.  Really. I will. Ask around.
Estimated total time:  2 - 6 hours  (1 to 4.5 hours with me, about 30 minutes of homework per session)
Estimated total cost:  $60 - $240

If you have a student who needs help with the math section of a college entrance exam:

Students' needs here are all over the map.  If the student just needs test preparation, one to five 90-minute sessions will generally do it.  If, on the other hand, the student hasn't really understood any math since fractions.....well, that's another story.  Again, here is another situation where I don't recommend spending a lot of time on test prep, but being better at math would be beneficial in life. Depending on the student's needs I may recommend the purchase of a workbook (typically $12 - $30). The student will need access to a test study guide.

Assuming there are no serious issues, you should try to schedule:  5 90-minute sessions, unless we've spoken and I recommended fewer.  If your student finishes sooner, I will cancel any remaining sessions at no cost to you.  Really. I will. Ask around.
Estimated total time:  2 - 10 hours; 1.5 - 7.5 hours with me and about 30 minutes of "homework" per session.
Estimated total cost:  $80 - $350 (including books)
